Things We’re Looking Forward To In 2022

It’s the start of a new year and another chance for a year of adventures. 2021 was a time when we got back to spending time in the outdoors and looked for new places to visit. We picked up some new gear to make things a little easier, and we learned a lot about taking three dogs on all these trips. We had no plan outside of two camping trips for the year and flew by the seat of our pants, which is my specialty but not Darrell’s favourite way of doing things. In the end, we had so many unplanned adventures and had a great time doing it. This year we have a few more things planned out and I can’t wait! Here are some of the things we’re looking forward to in 2022.

WINTER CAMPING

Darrell’s been talking about going winter camping for years but I’ve been the holdout until this year. Now I REALLY want to go winter camping because there’s no way I’m not camping for 5 or 6 months. Miss out on those adventures? Nope! We have both a 4-season tent that works great for camping in colder temps, but also an insulated ice hut to allow us to sleep on the ice. Obviously we’re most likely to use the one that let’s us fish while camping. After watching so many YouTube videos of fellow anglers sleeping on the ice, I can’t wait to try it. We were supposed to go over the holidays but we both got wickedly sick and couldn’t go. Soon!

CANOE TRIP

Our camping is usually done with the truck, or the boat, and the canoe is usually just used for day trips. This year we’re hoping to do at least one canoe camping trip where we can get away from everything just a little bit more and take a little less gear. We haven’t made solid plans yet but we’d love to hit up the interior lakes at The Massasauga Provincial Park.

THE GATHERING

I am SO excited for this overlanding event put on by Overland NTH! Last year we got into overlanding and have been wanting to meet other overlanders, learn from the community, and just chat about exploring and adventuring in our vehicles. We’ve already got our tickets for the The Gathering – Creemore in June and will hopefully be attending the Muskoka event in the fall as well.

TRUCK MODS

When we bought our truck we decided to get one with the Tremor package, making it a little more capable offroad than the basic Ranger. However, as we’ve taken it on more adventures, we’ve realized that there are a few things we could really use to add it, like rock sliders, a winch, and more lights. I’ve never been a big fan of modding out our vehicles, and this one will stay as stock as it can, but these additions should make a big difference for our safety and our ability to get into more remote areas.

NEW FISHING SPOTS

We’re going to return to many of the new fishing spots we scouted out in 2021. Some will be great spots to put the Lund in, others will be better with the 12-foot tinny, and some others will be canoe access only. Heading back to places we’ve already scouted should be great fun, and I love fishing a new lake and seeing what we come up with. Finding some good crappie lakes is high on my list this year! Hopefully we’ll get out fishing more than ever this year.

MORE MEMORIES WITH THE DOGS

This is what I’m looking forward to the most. Our family consists of the two of us and our three dogs (plus countless other animals that aren’t practical to travel with). Taking them on every adventure with us last year was such a blast, and I’m looking forward to taking them more places and letting them have even more fun. Molly won’t even let us walk by the truck without begging to get inside and go for a drive.

There are so many fun thing in the works for this year! So many camping trips in the works! Of course, we make a bunch of plans, then life happens, and plans change. But whatever we do we’ll spend as much time together, outdoors, and in search of fish, as possible. Here’s to another year of adventures!
