The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Starts This Friday

A perfect day at the 2012 Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular.

It seems like every derby I enter on a regular basis is my favorite, but you really can’t beat the size and festivity of the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. If you want to spend a week surrounded by boats, passionate anglers, and a heck of a lot of fun, this is the place to be. Running August 23 – September 1 this year, the Salmon Spectacular will once again feature long days on the water, a plethora of prizes, and entertainment each day under the big tent.

I know more than few people who attend this event strictly for the evening entertainment and ‘refreshments’ served under the big tent. It’s a big party and revelers always seem to have a great time. Me, well, I’m a little more boring – I attend this event strictly to spend time on the water (although I do get a kick out of the Elvis impersonators). Oddly enough, the first year Darrell dragged me to Owen Sound, I spent maybe an hour on the water. The weather was awful and the waves were more than I wanted to deal with. Considering the inauspicious start, I had to laugh when I found myself out on the water in some large swells last year. Despite our boat’s small size, it’s only a 12-ft tinny after all, we don’t miss much fishing when in Owen Sound.

It’s hard to describe exactly why I love this event, but there’s a unique camaraderie. Being on the water in a mass of boats, everyone having a good time and searching for that elusive monster salmon or trout, it’s just a neat feeling. In fact, it’s harder to understand why I love this event so much when you consider that I rarely catch a fish up there. Last year was the first time that I actually got to enter a fish. That’s not to say that it’s hard to catch fish in Owen Sound – there are guys who make the leaderboard every single day. Most people seem to have far better luck than Darrell and I, but we enjoy it anyway.

Another bonus for this event is that tickets only cost $25 each, or you can get a family entry for $60. We’re always on a tight budget, so $25 each is an affordable amount for us to pay. Tickets need to be bought at least a day in advance of when you plan to fish. You can buy them at the big tent, or at one of many retailers listed on the website.

If you’re looking for something to do in the next while, I highly recommend making the drive to Owen Sound and taking a shot at the Salmon Spectacular. Maybe you’ll end up winning one of the grand prize boats, but even if you don’t, you’ll have an awesome time.
