Ice Conditions – January 19, 2013
Even though I had yet to fulfill my end of a bargain with Darrell – completing all my homework so I could spend Sunday fishing – we did get out to have a look at the ice today. What we found wasn’t very surprising, but was still disappointing. I won’t be fishing until next weekend.
Fairy Lake (Acton) – Not safe. The ice is rotten and it didn’t take much effort for Darrell to break through it with the spud. It was extremely thin in most spots. There’s enough ice there that the cold temperatures in next week’s forecast should make safe ice for next weekend.
Guelph Lake – This was a no go today. The ice was more rotten than I would like and hasn’t set up enough for me to feel safe. That said, Darrell did measure thickness at 5 to 6 inches in spots, but it didn’t feel like good quality ice to him. We decided to avoid it this weekend BUT, there were two anglers on the side of the lake we normally fish (and where we checked), and a couple others on the main part of the lake. It’s personal preference. If you decide to go out there, test constantly and wear your safety gear. If you’re nervous on the ice, don’t head out this weekend. I’m going to give the ice another week before I plan to go out on it.
Island Lake (Orangeville) – Not open this weekend, but CVC has posted that they plan to open the ice fishing season on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, provided the weather cooperates. Hut rentals will not be available until later in the week.
Belwood Lake – Not open yet, ice conditions are still unsafe. Keep an eye on the GRCA website for updates on the Winter Activities.
Stay safe!

Bummer you haven’t gotten out yet. We’ve been hitting Little Lake in Barrie since New Years with widely varied results,
I’ve been out three times this season with little to show for it 🙁 We went up to Little Lake in Barrie on New Year’s Eve and ended up with one perch. I’m spending so much time driving during the week that I really don’t want to drive far on the weekends to hit a fishing spot. I can’t wait for next weekend – should be able to fish most of the local lakes.
