Gear Review & Giveaway – AVON Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard

Spending time outdoors and on the water is what I like to do. Give me a fishing rod, my fishing buddy and our dogs, and it doesn’t get much better. Getting through the day without a sunburn or being turned into an itchy, red mess after the bugs have feasted on me, is really the icing on the cake.

I have used several different sunscreen and insect repellent products over the years – some worked very well, others did not. When I was offered the chance to try out the AVON Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard collection, I hoped to find a new weapon in my summer fun protection arsenal.

I had the perfect opportunity to test out these products on my recent trip to the Moon River. The first night of the trip I got out for some fishing. The sun was down and the bugs were biting so I pulled out the Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin and sprayed away. Despite a cloud of mosquitoes buzzing around me, I made it through the night without a single bite.

During the days I started by applying the Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535 SPF 30 Gentle Breeze Lotion. This sunscreen contains IR3535 in a concentration of 7.5%, meaning it is safe to reapply every two hours, up to nine times a day. This is a big consideration as sunscreen needs to be applied frequently, but products with higher concentrations of insect repellent should not be applied so often. With this product, I felt safe to apply it as frequently as needed.

However, I am a forgetful sort, and when I get caught up in the excitement of fishing I tend to forget to reapply sunscreen. It even takes a few bug bites before I remember to reapply my insect repellent. In order to avoid this, I kept the Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Expedition SPF 30 Aerosol Spray handy. A quick spray had me protected once again and I could keep on fishing. Always remember to spray this away from your fishing line as line does not like insect repellent.

I made it through the weekend at the Moon River without a single bug bite – quite an accomplishment. Even better, I didn’t get a sunburn! I have used these products every time I’ve hit the water since then and have yet to get a bug bite or sunburn. The only ‘complaint’ I have is that the bottles of lotion are not very large. When I apply sunscreen lotion, I use a lot of it, and I’m not sure how long this bottle will last me. The Gentle Breeze lotion has now been used for eight solid days of fishing, with two of us applying it at least once per day. The bottle is not empty yet, but I think it soon will be.

For those who would prefer not to use insect repellents containing DEET, this may be the alternative you are looking for. For more information about the differences between DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, and other alternatives, I found the Integrated Mosquito Management page to be quite helpful.

The AVON Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard collection has become part of my packing for any outdoors activity. It keeps me comfortable all day on the water and allows me to keep fishing. That’s really my main requirement of any product.
