Gear Review: Carhartt Gear Holds Up To Fishing

Clothing is the last thing I think about when I get ready for a fishing trip, yet it tends to have a huge impact on how long I can stay out on the water. If I’m too cold, too hot, or too wet, I may have to call it a day before I’ve had enough time fishing to soothe my often hectic mind. That time on the water is as necessary as breathing these days, so when Carhartt asked me if I would like to try out some of their gear, I jumped at the chance.

Carhartt has always been a brand that I have respected – their clothes are designed to be worn in all circumstances and hold up. When Darrell worked at a sawmill he had a Carhartt coat that lasted twice as long as any other coat he had ever worn at work. That’s a pretty big deal considering how fast his clothes wore out at that job.

I received the Women’s Downburst Waterproof Breathable Jacket and I can’t tell you how much I love it! This jacket fits comfortably, is lightweight, breathable, and holds up well to a good amount of rain. I have had it out on a few fishing trips now and have gotten rained on almost every time I’ve worn it. No rain gets through and I stay nice and dry so I can continue to focus on fishing. It’s breathable enough to wear on those warm summer days without breaking into a sweat and I’ve worn it just as protection against biting insects while out fishing. I’m not gentle with clothes and I’ve taken this jacket off, crumpled it into a ball, and shoved it in with the boat’s safety gear. Maybe I’m just lucky, but no rips so far! This is an extremely comfortable jacket that I can fish in all day long.

Carhartt also sent along a gear pack for Darrell to try. This pack included gear worn by Mike Fourtner, deckhand on the Time Bandit, my favorite boat from the show Deadliest Catch. Here is Mike talking about his opinion on Carhartt gear:

Darrell received the Men’s Waterproof Breathable Acadia Jacket – and loves it every bit as much as I love my jacket. He agrees that it’s great in the rain and comfortable to wear. We both wore our jackets in the rain for a couple of hours this past weekend and stayed completely dry, but neither of us wanted to test them in the steady downpour that followed later that morning. We put our rainsuits on for that.

Darrell also tried out the Men’s Long Sleeve Workwear Henley, and the Midweight Hooded Logo Sweatshirt. Both of these shirts were comfortable and allowed Darrell to stay warm during the chilly mornings when we were up north this past weekend. I also happen to think he looks great in them.

The Carhartt Hoodie.

This gear reinforced my belief that Carhartt produces quality clothing. Not only are the clothes of great quality, but they are extremely suitable for those who enjoy the outdoors. If my jacket can survive several fishing trips without a rip, it can handle just about anything.  The next time you are looking to purchase some clothing, be sure to check out what Carhartt has to offer.
