Chilly Weather Brings Thoughts Of Ice Fishing

With the chilly weather in these parts the last few days, I find my mind thinking of ice fishing. It’s strange, because I’m not the biggest fan of dawning the floater suit and waddling around on the ice like a big orange penguin, but I can’t seem to stop thinking about hitting the ice. Maybe it’s because my mind is giving into the inevitable. It’s Canada. It’s getting cold. It will be snowing sooner rather than later.

With that in mind I started thinking about preparation for the hard water season. I should start lifting some weights to get my arms in shape for using the auger. Last year taught me the importance of having sharp blades on the auger after it took me half-an-hour to drill one hole with dull blades. At least I won’t have to drill through ice this thick:

By the end of last winter I was getting tired of having to sit out in the wind and snow when fishing. An ice hut would be a great addition to our ice fishing equipment. I think I’ll skip on this hut though:

However, as a hockey-loving Canadian, this hut is right up my alley:

Of course, on those real cold and blustery days I sometimes need a little motivation to leave the house. I’m thinking of making this my new ice fishing anthem (kind of like Rocky’s theme song):

Or maybe this chipper tune (yes, I said chipper)…

But at the end of the day it’s all about being able to catch fish…

Hmmmm…maybe I am getting excited about ice fishing!

  1. I am actually quite excited about the hard water this year, as well! I am not sure if you read my story of my first ice fishing adventure or not,
(http://www.brookfieldangler.com/2011/02/anti-ice-fisherman-goes-ice-fishing.html) but if you did, you will learn that I am a convert. This will be my first real year of really trying it.

Looks like you had a pretty fun first ice fishing adventure! Last year was my first full ice fishing season and I actually had a lot of fun. We stuck to local lakes though and this year I want to venture farther for some bigger fish…
