Gear Review: Baffin Titan -100 Boots

If you want to enjoy ice fishing, the most important thing you can do is wear a good pair of boots.  If your feet get cold it won’t be long before the rest of you is cold and you have to cut your fishing trip short.

Last winter I wore boots rated to -40C, and quickly found out that I needed three or four pairs of socks to keep my feet warm enough to last a few hours on the ice. Invariably, by the time we returned to the car my feet would be frozen and the rest of me was rapidly cooling.

In preparation for this ice season Darrell and I decided we needed to find better boots. Since -40C boots did not keep me warm enough, I decided I could not settle for anything other than -100C boots.  At a local powersports store we came across the Baffin Titan -100 boots.

The -100C rating initially caught my attention, but the waterproof and durable design quickly became a selling point. And then I put my foot in the boot and was sold. The 8-layer, removable liner molded to my foot and was more comfortable than I could have expected. And at a cost of around $100, these boots were cheaper than many of the other options we were looking at.

This past weekend was my first chance to test out my new Titans as we hit the ice at Island Lake. I decided to wear a thin pair of dress socks, covered by a pair of my regular socks, and took a spare pair of socks along with me in case I wasn’t warm enough. I never touched that extra pair of socks. From beginning to end my feet stayed warm – never getting chilly or sweaty. Whether I was sitting in the hut, walking between fishing spots, or standing at a hole, my feet were so comfortable that I rarely ever thought about them.

These boots are surprisingly lightweight and walking from spot to spot was easy and comfortable. I like that the entire boot is waterproof and I don’t have to worry about the water that splashes everywhere when I pull the auger out of the hole.

I cannot say enough about the liners in these boots – they engulf your foot and leg to provide support and comfort to every area. Since they are removable we were able to take them out of the boots when we got home to let them dry and be ready for the next outing.

The Baffin Titans are an excellent ice fishing boot and I strongly encourage you to consider purchasing a pair next time you are looking for some.

12 Years Later

As I was putting on my boots this morning, I realized that I should update this post. Twelve years later, we still have those original Baffin Titans we bought. We’ve never bought new liners, and we wear them every winter.

Darrell was gifted a another pair of them a few years ago, which meant I could take his original pair that now fit me better. My first pair has become winter barn boots and they’ve held up to the rigors of daily chores – walking through mud, snow and ice, going in and out of stalls and the chicken coop, and all the other situations they get put in.

We use these boots for ice fishing and snowmobiling. They’re our footwear when heading out in the boat just after ice out and in any other sort of cold weather. I find them comfortable to walk in and great on ice. The only downside is that they’re more expensive now than when we first bought them, but we have sure gotten our money’s worth and then some!

I’ll never stop recommending Baffin Titan boots when someone asks for winter boot recommendations. These boots are fantastic!

  1. Enjoyed this article. Do you know if your boots are rubber or vinyl? I think rubber grips better, but the newer vinyl is not far behind rubber. I have to buy overboots only because after many years, I have given up trying to locate or source wide width boots.

The Baffin website says the Titans have a “Premium Polar Rubber outsole, TR/Rubber/PU base”. I agree that rubber seems to grip better and while these have a good tread and were great with some snow covering the ice, I will still add cleats for most outings on the ice (but I lack stability to begin with). Both Darrell and I have wide feet and these boots fit us well. I would go a size or two bigger than you normally wear.

  2. -Thanks. There is a hand-out from Thinsulate/3M that recommends spraying your feat with underarm antiperspirant in very cold weather to limit moisture in your boot.

Great review. I got mine on Boxing Day but haven’t had the chance to put them to use other than in the backyard. I agree with you that they really do “cradle” your feet.

What was the air temperature during your outing?

What do you think? We'd love to know.
