DSG Outerwear Gear Review

It’s not an easy task to find outerwear that fits when you’re a plus-sized woman who enjoys the outdoors. Finding a good ice fishing suit was proving especially difficult when I went looking for it last season. Until I found DSG Outerwear.

My search requirements were pretty simple. I wanted to go with bibs (pants) and a jacket. They needed to be available in sizes above 2XL so I had plenty of room for layers underneath. Ideally they would have built-in flotation, in case the worst happens and I go through the ice.

DSG Outerwear won me over with sizes from XS to 5XL. Now that’s inclusive sizing!

But more than that, the clothes are designed to be comfortable, functional, and they’re actually made for women. Whether you need outerwear for ice fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, or some other activity, you can find it at DSG.

I ended up buying the Arctic Appeal jacket and the Avid Drop Seat bibs. The biggest problem I found with ordering from DSG Outerwear was that many of the sizes were sold out on their website when I was looking. Order early in the season to get the size you need, or check back frequently. I ended up ordering the jacket through Amazon and got it on sale, which was a nice bonus.

This is my second winter with the clothes and between ice fishing and snowmobiling, they’ve been amazing.

What I love about my DSG Outerwear:

  • Sizes that fit and leave plenty of room for extra layers and movement.
  • So many pockets and most of them have magnets for closure which is much easier to open and close with gloves on. The bibs came with a small towel in one of the pockets. That was a nice touch.
  • Both the bibs and jacket have the Flotex Flotation Assist System. It’s not coast guard approved but it’ll help if I go through the ice.
  • D rings that are perfect for attaching my snowmobile kill switch to.
  • Drop seat on the bibs so I don’t have to take them off to use the bathroom.
  • The bibs have a layer of snaps at the bottom so you can make the legs shorter if needed (I needed).
  • The jacket has a removable hood. I wear it while ice fishing and remove it for snowmobiling.
  • SO WARM. These are remarkable at keeping the wind out and keeping me warm on the coldest days. Snowmobiling in -25C? Not a problem. I could go out in way colder temps. Fishing outside the hut on a cold day? You’re good.

What I don’t love about my DSG Outerwear:

  • The interior pocket on the jacket closes with velcro. I’d prefer a zipper so it was completely closed. That said, I’ve never had anything fall out.

Price-wise, they seem comparable to other bib and jacket systems. They came in around $500CAD for both pieces (would have been about $600 without the sale), but the price is subject to change and depends on the exact styles you buy.

The clothes are fantastic quality and have held up well to the dogs jumping on me, getting fishing lures caught in them, traipsing through snow, kneeling on ice, and so much more.

If you’re a woman who loves the outdoors, especially a plus-sized woman who enjoys the outdoors, I highly recommend checking out the DSG Outerwear lineup for your clothing needs.
