Father’s Day Fishing On Lake Ontario

Father’s Day was a good day to get out fishing with my dad and get him away from the every day. My dad loves fishing and the outdoors, and he took me fishing all the time when I was younger. Now it was my turn to take him fishing. We made plans to fish Lake Ontario on Father’s Day weekend, weather permitting. On Saturday, June 15th, the day before Father’s Day, the weather looked perfect and I headed to my parents place, hooked on the boat, loaded it up, and off we went.

We launched the boat at Lakefront Promenade Park in Mississauga around 9AM. Our goal was to fish for salmon and trout with downriggers and dipsy divers. With a four rod spread – three rods on the riggers and one rod with a diver, we setup in 70 feet-of-water. We fished from 70 feet-of-water out to 200 feet-of-water and had no luck all morning or early into the afternoon. At 2:30 we decided to take a break and headed in for lunch at the sausage stand by the ramp, then headed out for on last kick at the can.

We fished for awhile and were thinking of calling it a day without any fish around 5:30. I  was putting stuff away and was disappointed that we hadn’t caught anything…and then it happened. The drag was screaming on my dad’s rod and he jumped up to grab it while I grabbed the wheel of the boat. Fish on! It leaped out of the water and we knew right away that it was a rainbow trout. I asked my dad what lure it hit on, half knowing the answer already. He replied that it was a silver spoon – what else? My dad has one silver spoon that always catches him fish, and I mean always. We landed the fish and it proved to be a nice 7lb rainbow. My dad wanted rainbow trout for his Father’s Day dinner so we decided to keep it, even though we usually release everything we catch.

Now it’s on and we want another fish. We set back up and trolled for awhile longer and didn’t get a bite, so we again thought about calling it a day. I was putting tackle away after trying everything in the box and I saw a log floating in the water. I said to my dad, “That’s a big log over there,” and he says to me, “That’s a viking submarine!” We had a good laugh and I thought I had to get a picture of it so we started moving closer and I got the camera, and again, a rod starts screaming! This time it’s my rod and my dad grabbed it out of the rod holder and handed it off to me. My turn. It turned out to be another rainbow trout and kept jumping out of the water, trying to shake the hook. We landed the fish and after a quick picture, put her back in the water and watched her swim away.

We started trolling back to the launch and I didn’t realize until we were almost there that I never did get a picture of the viking submarine. The thrill of fighting a fish erased every other thought from my mind. It was a great day of fishing with my dad and I hope to get out with him again sometime soon.

First of all, just wanted to say how much it is appreciated when one thinks of their father or mother for that matter, and with respect, shows them a great time. Something satisfying for sure about that. Nice Rainbows, too! That is why it is always hard to give up on a day of fishing. Wait, just one more cast……………….

Thanks, I never want to call it a day. I just wish I could find the time to take my mom and dad out more often.

What do you think? We'd love to know.
