It’s Almost Time For The Shimano Take A Kid Fishing Day
Every year, Belwood Lake Conservation Area gets taken over by throngs of kids eager to experience all the joy and possibility that fishing can give them. The annual Shimano Take A Kid Fishing Day is an experience like no other, and has kids returning year-after-year. This year’s event is scheduled for May 4th, 2013.
For the lucky children that attend this event, they will get the opportunity to learn how to fish at the kids fishing pond (full of hungry rainbow trout), they will learn how to tie flies and work with lures, how to tie knots, and even get an introduction to archery. This is a day where kids can meet fishing pros and ask them whatever questions they like. For parents, this is a wonderful way to get your kids outdoors and introduce them to a passion that can last a lifetime.
I was lucky enough to help out at last year’s event, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. In between untangling lines, resetting bobbers, and adding worms to hooks, I was able to help more than a few kids make their first ever cast. The smiles were delightful, and the shouts of joy when anyone hooked into a fish where a great reminder why fishing is such a perfect pastime.
This fantastic program is free of charge, but you will have to pay park admission. Kids can be registered for either the morning session, or the afternoon session. Space is limited so pre-registration is required. Please see the event flyer for more information.
I won’t be able to make it to this year’s event, but if you attend, look for Darrell at the kids fishing pond and say hi!
