Volunteer At Willow Park Ecology Centre

A few years back, I used to work at a law firm in Georgetown, Ontario. It was the first job where I had a real, designated lunch break, and after spending the morning in my windowless office, I figured there was no better way to enjoy my lunch hour than to go outside. What I wanted to find was a great spot where I could sit in a peaceful setting to eat my lunch, then go for a walk and interact with nature. It took a couple of weeks, but I eventually stumbled upon Willow Park Ecology Centre in Norval, just outside of Georgetown. It was the perfect spot – I would sit by the river to eat my lunch, then meander along the trails and have some fun.

Since those days, I have always had a soft spot for Willow Park Ecology Centre (WPEC), and have been excited to learn about all the awesome ways for people to get involved with this nature preserve. WPEC hosts summer day camps, stewardship events, nature appreciation events, educational programs, and more. Participating in these events is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. Volunteering for these events is a wonderful way to give back and support a wonderful organization.

Here are some of the coming events:

June 8 (9:00 am-noon) Experience Nature: Willow Park Volunteer Event

You are invited to join Credit Valley Conservation, WPEC and the community to learn more about ecology and the environment while restoring Willow Park Ecology Centre on Saturday June 8th, from 9:00 am– 12:00 pm. Located in Norval (access of Mary St.) along the west branch of the Credit River at the east end of Hungry Hollow, the former trailer park is gradually returning to a natural area for education and recreation through dedicated volunteer efforts.

The current challenge is the displacement of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers with invasive plant species such as European Buckthorn and Garlic Mustard. On June 8th volunteers will target the removal of small Buckthorn trees and replacement planting of native trees.

Buckthorn is harmful to birds, shade tolerant native shrubs/herbs and some farm crops (www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca). Tips on preventing spread of invasive plants include: avoiding the use of them in your gardens and landscape, remaining on designated trails when hiking and contacting the Invasive Species Hotline 1-800-563-7711 with your questions.

Nurture your green thumb and your soul as you experience nature during this opportunity to give back to North Halton’s beautiful Ecology Centre! This event is suitable for all ages and will happen rain or shine. Be sure to dress for the weather. Shovels, gloves, and light refreshments will be provided. To register visit www.willowparkecology.ca Volunteer page. For more information email Credit Valley Conservation at ljennings@creditvalleyca.ca or call Willow Park at 905-702-9055.
