Looking Through The Window

The view out of my office window.

This week was reading week, that most glorious of weeks when you’re enrolled in post-secondary education – you have no classes, there are no assignments due, and you can spend your time catching up on all the activities you love. When I was a university student, that’s exactly what I did. Reading week was a time to pick up more hours at work, a time when I could spend more hours playing with the horses, and a great time to sleep.

My last reading week was eight years ago and I remember it with fondness. When I entered college this year I couldn’t wait to get to reading week so I could have a break, catch up on sleep, and most importantly, catch up on my fishing time. Something seems to have happened though. Along the way I ended up with a lot of bills to pay, a house to look after and a collection of animals, I shortened our household income by leaving my job and returning to school, and I learned that there are no longer enough hours in a day for me to accomplish everything. I also found that I am no longer capable of pulling all-nighters all week long. I have a lot of responsibilities and have become extremely talented at that trait most females excel at – worrying. On Monday I sat down at the table, looked over my agenda for the next few weeks at school, and quickly scrapped any fishing plans I had. In order to take advantage of my weekends, the time when Darrell and I get to relax and fish, I needed to get ahead on some school work.

So here I am, it’s Friday, I’m yet again staring at a computer screen and glancing out the window at the outside world I am so dearly missing. There are a few more things to check off on my list for today, so I probably won’t get to experience much of the outdoors. However, I think putting my nose to the grindstone all week may actually pay off. I wish I had been this responsible in university – I would have graduated with better marks! With any luck, I’ll have enough of this work completed that I can stop worrying for a bit and spend the weekend outside. Aside from getting a full day on the ice, I’m hoping that Darrell and I will be able to take the dogs out and go geocaching for the first time. I’m really excited about getting into geocaching and think it’s awesome way for us to spend more time outside. More time outside is something I desperately need as it’s the only way for me to relax and stay centered. Thank goodness reading week is almost over 🙂

Have a great weekend everyone!
