Fishy Fun For February

If you’re stuck digging out from the latest dumping of snow and wishing for warmer weather, take heart, there are lots of great fishing-related events going on in Southern Ontario this February, both inside and outside.

Toronto Sportsmen’s Show – The event started on February 7th and runs until tomorrow, February 10th, 2013. Venture out to the Direct Energy Centre to see the latest fishing gear and boats, and take in some great seminars.

Spring Fishing and Boat Show – Takes place February 15th through February 18th, 2013 at the International Centre in Mississauga. I usually don’t like taking time away from fishing just to walk around indoors, but this is the one event I try to attend each winter. I enjoy the venue and really appreciate the free parking. I have to set a budget every time I go because there’s way too much fishing gear available to buy.  Great seminars, lots of exhibitors, shiny boats, and the chance to meet and mingle with fellow anglers are all good reasons to attend this event.

The indoor events are great, especially if you are dreaming of the open water season. However, if you’re like me and would rather be out on the ice trying to catch some fish, there are plenty of derbies and tournaments to join.

Annual Island Lake Ice Fishing Derby – Started February 1st and runs to February 28th, 2013 at Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville. This is a month long derby with weekly draw prizes and awards at the end for the top 3 longest northern pike, and the longest black crappie and yellow perch. Registration is only $30 and is open until February 28th, the final day of the derby. Island Lake is a great place to spend a day on the ice. You can rent a hut, or bring your own portable hut, and join the group of anglers having a great time.

Feed the Fish Tournament – Held on February 16th, 2013 on Frenchman’s Bay (Lake Ontario), this tournament is a great way to give back to the fishery. A portion of your entry fee goes to help Ringwood Fish Culture Station and their programs, while the rest goes into the prize pot. This event takes place on Family Fishing Weekend so everyone in the family can fish, whether or not they have a license. If you’re looking for something to do that weekend, spending the day on the ice and supporting a great cause is a wonderful idea.

Family Fishing WeekendFebruary 16th – 18th, 2013. There are a host of great events scheduled for Family Fishing Weekend. Check out the events pages and see what is happening in your area. This is a great way to get others involved in a wonderful sport.

Canadian Ice Fishing Championship February 22nd – 24th, 2013. Looking to satisfy your competitive needs? Sign up for the Canadian Ice Fishing Championship at Jackson’s Pt., Lake Simcoe. Good fun, a good time on the ice, and great prizes. Check it out!

These are but a handful of the great fishing-related activities available this month in Southern Ontario. I encourage you to check them out. Don’t forget that this weather doesn’t need to keep you indoors. There are lots of great Conservation Areas open for ice fishing, hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. Have fun!

  1. As much as I love the fishing show season, I hate it as well! My bank account always seems to be a bit smaller for some reason.

What do you think? We'd love to know.
