Make Your Christmas Baking Fishy

I love to bake all year round, but at Christmas I like to step it up and make tons of cookies. Sugar cookies are my favorite, and usually my most well-received recipe. The thing is, they lack that personal touch. However, thanks to some inspiration from the ladies at B’ASS Fisher Women, I’ll be making fish-shaped sugar cookies this year, which will have all those who know me shaking their heads and asking if I could possibly be any weirder.

Finding suitable fish-shaped cookie cutters was a problem until today, when I foundĀ The Cookie Cutter Shop. They have a variety of cookie cutters to meet your needs, three of which suit my needs perfectly.

What could be better than handing your friends and family a tin of appropriately decorated fish? I can’t wait to make these!

My own sugar cookie recipe is pretty simple:

  • 1-3/4 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2-2/3 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  1. Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 400F.
  4. Roll dough on floured surface, 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick. Cut into shapes and decorate with sprinkles, sugar, or chocolate chips if desired. Place on parchment lined cookie sheets.
  5. Bake 6 to 8 minutes (I find 6 minutes is perfect in my oven).

There are many good icing recipes online if you wish to decorate the cookies.

Happy baking!

  1. Yep, one can never have too many fish-shaped items in the kitchen or around the house. Put a fish on it!
