Book Review – Paddling And Hiking The Georgian Bay Coast by Kas Stone

It’s no secret that Georgian Bay is one of my favorite places to visit. The fishing is usually fantastic, the scenery is breathtaking, and there are no shortage of outdoors adventures to be had.

On a recent trip to the Parry Sound area, I found myself browsing through a gift shop. Always being in need of a good book, I picked up a copy of Paddling and Hiking The Georgian Bay Coast by Kas Stone. The beautiful pictures and the promise of learning more places to explore along the fabulous Georgian Bay Coast had me handing over my debit card and walking away with a new treasure.

Each chapter of the book focuses on a specific area of the Georgian Bay Coast. Starting in Killarney, and working around to Parry Sound, Collingwood and eventually Tobermory, the paddling and hiking opportunities available in each area are carefully explained and laid out with maps and detailed descriptions. The best part is that all paddling adventures are portage-free! That’s wonderful news for lazy people like myself. There are options for day trips, as well as trips that will take several days. The beginning of each chapter offers a brief history of the area, and the end of each chapter lists resources for that may come in handy.

While you can can skip around to the chapters that interest you, I could not help but read the book from cover to cover. If you’re a bit of a history and geology-buff, the introduction chapter is fascinating. Understanding the geological forces that created this region will give you a new appreciation of the breathtaking views and the abundant rock. It is amazing how much the landscape changes as you venture along the coastline, and I can’t wait to explore more of it.

The author uses a light and entertaining tone through the book, and her enthusiasm for the topic comes through quite clearly. Looking at the pictures featured throughout the book, I have to admit to some envy for the adventures the author has had. I can only hope to catch up!

After reading this book I have two goals for next year – explore the French River area, and visit some of the numerous shipwrecks along the Georgian Bay coast. This book has inspired me to start planning my next adventures to the area, and will encourage you to do the same.

Paddling and Hiking The Georgian Bay Coast by Kas Stone is a book that should be added to any outdoors enthusiast’s library. Pick up a copy and get exploring!

Thanks for the great book review. I was thinking of finding a book like this because I have always wanted to get out to the Georgian Bay area and have a good look around. So far, the only trips up there that I have had were with my drunken buddies to Wasaga Beach for a couple days of debauchery. 🙂

A lot of people visit to enjoyGeorgian Bay Kayaking and I think this book will help everyone who have less knowledge of Georgian Bay. And I’m also gonna buy this!

What do you think? We'd love to know.
