Belated Mother’s Day Fishing At Fairy Lake
This post is going to be something a little different – it will be the first one written by Darrell, not myself. This is a report of his fishing trip from this past Saturday, when I was attending a workshop and unable to hit the water. I hope you enjoy it!

Last weekend was busy with the Binbrook Crappie Derby and a broken water heater, not leaving much time for Mother’s Day. Today, a week after Mother’s Day I finally got to take my mom fishing.
I wanted my mom to catch fish. I know she likes catching pike, and as a girl she liked catching rock bass, so we went crappie fishing in Fairy Lake, where there’s also some pike.
Our day started off slow. We saw lots of fish but we couldn’t figure out what they wanted. I settled on a white curly-tail grub and my mom used a chartreuse Berkeley Micro Power Nymph. After a couple of moves we found active fish – but they were more scattered than I thought they would be.
We ended up catching lots of crappie, the biggest being 11-inches caught by my mom. We also got a pike each, my mom catching the big one again, and lots of good-sized sunfish.
All-in-all it was a great day with my mom. Thanks Mom!

Hi there,
I went to Fairy Lake this morning and finally I got some fish but not crappie. Got some sunfish but still good day to venture out.
Got stuck in the fallen trees and lost some jig.
Can you tell me how deep you fish and do you use jig head and what weight should I put and do I need float?
Also what time you start fishing in Fairy Lake. I went very early today but still cannot got crappie.

I’m glad you got some fish. The sunfish usually put up a good fight, and there are some pretty big ones in there.
At this time of the year, I usually look for weeds or stumps in shallower water, but with access to deeper water, which is why the area by the creek and boat launch tends to be productive. There’s no specific depth that seems to make a difference. I don’t use a float, but I’m usually fishing out of the boat. From shore a float would allow you to keep your lure in the strike zone for a longer time. I use 1/32oz jig heads.
I’m not an early riser so I rarely hit Fairy Lake first thing in the morning. I’ve fished it between 9am and 6pm and don’t notice a huge difference in the bite.
The big thing seems to be getting familiar with the lake and developing a pattern that works for you. What works for me won’t necessarily work for someone else. All I can say is just keep trying. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your value information and I will take my small boat with trolling motor next time to try for some boat fishing but I have to wait till my buddy help me to carry the boat. He is a busy man.
