A Reminder Of Ice Fishing Dangers

Today was a reminder to be extremely careful while ice fishing. Despite the warm weather, high winds, and open water, many people are still venturing out onto Lake Simcoe to get their ice fishing fix. That turned scary today for up to 25 anglers that found themselves drifting away on an ice floe.

Rescues crews, including boats and a helicopter, had to be dispatched to save the anglers.

The Blue Ice Report also had some coverage of the rescue…

Now, the most important thing is that thanks to amazing rescue crews, everyone made it off the ice safely.

However, it’s a reminder that there is a time to call it quits with the ice fishing season. When I see the pictures of anglers out on the ice, that close to open water, with ice that is quickly degrading and incredibly high winds battering what’s left, I have to wonder where their common sense is.

Ice is never 100% safe. Why take the chance heading out on it when the weather makes it even less safe? Time to call it quits and get ready for open water.
