My Christmas Wish List

With the 25th just around the corner I figured I would share some of the items on my Christmas wish list this year.

It should come as no surprise that fishing-related items dominate the list, and it seems my theme this year is ice fishing. While ice fishing can be done with a minimum of gear, I’ve learned that there are many items that will make the hard-water season more enjoyable. Some of these items made my wish list.

  • Survival/Floater  Suit – Last season I used an old floater suit was a little on the tight side. I couldn’t complain too much about the fit though because there is nothing like a survival suit to make me a little more confident on the ice and to keep me warm. This year I would like to get a suit that actually fits me.
  • Ice Hut  – Again, I like to stay warm when I’m ice fishing. On a sunny day without much wind I don’t mind the lack of a shelter. But those days are few and far between in the winter and there is nothing I would like more than a portable ice hut. To have some shelter on those cold and breezy days would make it a lot easier to stay on the ice and catch a few more fish.

  • Warm Boots – This is the winter I want to upgrade my ice fishing footwear. I can no longer pretend that -40 degree boots work to keep my feet warm, and wearing 4 pairs of socks is just not an option. This year I want something that will keep my feet warm in any situation, I’m thinking -100 degrees and waterproof. (I may already have these stored away in a closet to be opened on Christmas morning….)

  • Ultralight Ice Rods – Last year I bought my first St. Croix Premier ultralight rod and I love it! I definitely want more of them so I can have multiple rods rigged and ready to go. Since crappie are my favorite target during the winter, a sensitive rod is a must.

  • Rapala DT Fat– One of my favorite new lures this past year. I love the action and how easy it is for me to fish it. This lure caught me quite a few fish and I’d like to get a variety of colors.
  • Rod Gloves – After two broken rods and many hang-ups, I need a way to protect my rods and keep them from getting tangled in each other. The Rod Glove is a great way to protect my investments.

Since I have not yet won the lottery, I will not be collecting everything on my wish list. However, I now understand what Darrell told me the first time I tried to buy him a Christmas gift – ‘Just get me something from the fishing aisle’. How can an angler refuse any fishing-related item? There’s always a way to use it!

I’d love to know what everyone else has put on their wish list – give me some ideas of things to ask for in the future!

  1. That’s a good list!!! I have to admit that I am quite envioius of your ability to narrow it down to specific items. People ask we what I want for Christams and my standard answer is, “Cabela’s”. That’s right the whole thing…well, maybe not ALL of them but just one store.

LOL I had the same reaction at first – ‘Just go to Bass Pro’. But then I decided narrowing it down to some ice fishing gear would mean I could use everything pretty quickly.

All those items would be awesome! Especially the survivor suit.

The survivor suit is essential. I am not a fan of the cold (and yet I love ice fishing) and the suit keeps me warm so I can concentrate on fishing. It also eases my mind as I constantly worry about how safe the ice is.

What do you think? We'd love to know.
